Course description

This course provides mental health professionals with essential knowledge and practical frameworks to support clients who use or are considering the use of psychedelic substances. The training is designed for clinicians who do not administer psychedelics and focuses on ethical, legal, and evidence-informed approaches to preparation, integration, and ongoing therapeutic support. Participants will develop a foundational understanding of commonly used psychedelic substances, along with the psychological and emotional experiences often associated with their use, and how these may present in clinical practice. Emphasis is placed on recognizing experiential patterns, supporting client preparation, and applying integration-oriented approaches within a therapeutic context. The course also addresses assessment basics, risk awareness, referral considerations, documentation practices, and maintaining professional boundaries while working within current regulatory frameworks.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

→ Describe the pharmacological and psychological effects of commonly used psychedelic substances and their relevance to mental health care. → Identify common psychological, emotional, and behavioral patterns associated with psychedelic experiences in clinical settings. → Apply evidence-informed approaches to support client preparation and post-experience integration.

This course does not train participants to administer, facilitate, or recommend psychedelic substances. Content is limited to education, assessment, ethical discussion, and therapeutic support for clients who independently engage in psychedelic use.

Information on Continuing Education Credit for Health Professionals

CE credits for psychologists are provided by the Spiritual Competency Academy (SCA) which is sponsoring this program. The Spiritual Competency Academy is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The Spiritual Competency Academy maintains responsibility for this program and its content. The California Board of Behavioral Sciences accepts CE credits for LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFT license renewal for programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the American Psychological Association. LCSW, LPCC, LEP, and LMFTs, and other mental health professionals from states other than California need to check with their state licensing boards as to whether or not they accept programs offered by approved sponsors of CE by the American Psychological Association. SCA is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN Provider CEP16887) for licensed nurses in California. RNs must retain their certificate of attendance for 4 years after the course concludes.
